First Generation

1. John MACKENZIE. Born on 22 OCT 1797 in Killearnan Parish, Ross-Shire, Scotland. John died in Stellarton, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, in 1898; he was 100. Buried in Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Nova Scotia. At the age of <1, John was baptized in Killearnan Parish, Ross-Shire, Scotland, on 23 OCT 1797. The baptism record reads: “Killearnan, 23 October 1797. That day, the Revd r. David Denoon baptised John, son to William Mackenzie, servant to Walter Ross, tenant in Kilcoy and his spouse Florence Cameron in Presence of John Mackenzie his father and the Kirk Officers. The child was born on the 22nd of October.”. Occupation: Farmer.
"On 23 October 1797 the Rev. David Denoon baptised John, son of William McKenzie, servant to Walter Ross, tenant in Kilroy and his spouse, Florence Cameron, in the presence of John McKenzie, his father and the Kirk Officers. The child was born 22 October 1797." This information was initially sent to me by my Internet friend, Elizabeth Dulaig (elizabeth.dulaig@@btopenworld.com) on 21 October 2004. She researched the OPRs of Killearnan. However, the headstone states that William MacKenzie dates were 1799-1898.

I have a certified copy of the baptism record from Scotland for John MacKenzie.

Notice that the spouse was Florence Cameron and not McMillan! This was most probably a mistake recorded by the Session Clerk, an error repeated quite often in the records of the time.

At the time of his marriage, John MacKenzie lived at Upper Settlement East.

On 14 JUL 1831 when John was 33, he married Catherine FRASER, daughter of FRASER. Rev. Donald Allen Fraser performed the ceremony. Born in 1814 in McLellan’s Brook, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. Catherine died on 26 FEB 1891; she was 77. Buried in Elgin Cemetery, Nova Scotia, Canada.
At the time of her marriage, Catherine lived in McLellan’s Brook, Nova Scotia, Canada. This rural area is located on McLellan’s Brook about four miles south-east of Stellarton.

Her tombstone reads: "In memory of Catherine Fraser wife of John McKenzie who died Feb. 26, 1891, aged 77 years. John McKenzie 1799-1898."
