Duncan Grant left $26,000 to his brothers and sisters at his death.
3. Alexander GRANT. Born in 1835. Alexander died on 22 FEB 1875; he was 40. I originally had 26 JAN 1867, but the online records show 22 Feb 1875.
All that is known about Alexander is he had one adopted unknown daughter and Elizabeth (Bessie).

I don’t known how I came across the other five children: Mary, Catherine, Robert, William and John. I forgot to make a notation. For now I am leaving them here for further research.
Alexander married Ann.
They had the following children:

4. William GRANT. Born in JUL 1838. Was on the census for 1871 Census. Was on the census for 1880 US Census. Carpenter in Providence, Rhode Island. Occupation: Carpenter.
The exact number and names of William Grant's children are contested. The 1871 Canadian Census lists Robert A. and the 1880 US Census lists: Robert A., William F., Mary A., and Elizabeth. However, Eleanor Cox says he had: Anna, Emma, Catherine, Fraser and Minnie. But, I have never been able to find these people on any list I consulted.

1860 US CENSUS FOR RHODE ISLAND:

William Grant, age 22, a carpenter from Nova Scotia is listed on the 1860 US Census of Rhode Island, enumerated on 6 July 1860, living in the 3rd Ward of Providence. He is living at a boarding house run by Elizabeth MacKay, age 38, born in Nova Scotia.

Elizabeth MacKay has two daughters living with her: Hannah A. MacKay, age 10, born in “Callis, SA” (indecipheral) and Margaret C., age 8 born in Nova Scotia. There is no husband listed for Elizabeth. The boarders are Thomas MacClellan, age 30, Carpenter, born Nova Scotia; Henry Craige, age 29, Boiler Maker, born in England; John Fraser, age 20 Carpenter, born in Nova Scotia; William Grant, age 22, Carpenter, born in Nova Scotia; and Christina MacMillan, age 24, Dress Maker, born in Nova Scotia.

With the approach of the American Civil War, I think William Grant returned to Nova Scotia after the 1860 US Census. He married Jessie Fraser in Nova Scotia about1870 and when their first child, Robert, was born around 1871, they returned to Rhode Island. William Grant and his family do not appear on the 1870 US Census, but William does appear on the 1871 Canadian Census.

1870 US CENSUS FOR RHODE ISLAND

1900 US CENSUS FOR RHODE ISLAND:

William Grant and Jessie Fraser are listed in the 1900 Census of Rhode Island living at 155 Lippitt Street in Providence, Rhode Island and he said he immigrated to the US in 1872 (This was the second time WIlliam entered the US. Previously he had entered the US about 1858). On the 1900 US Census he claimed to be a naturalized citizen.

Notice that their first-born son, Robert E. Grant, was not living with them at this time. He was a boarder with Charles and Mellisa Briggs in Warwick, Rhode Island. Robert states that he is 28, single, born in December 1870 in Nova Scotia and arrived in the US in 1872. He further stated that he was a physician and a naturalized citizen.

1920 US CENSUS FOR RHODE ISLAND

This Census shows William, age 81, Naturalized, and Jessie, age 75, Naturalized, living at 3196 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence, Rhode Island. There is a reference to St. Mary’s Seminary in East Providence (a nursing home?) at the top of the Census page. I really don’t know what this means. William’s sister, Catherine Grant, age 69, Single, Alien, was also living there with them. She said she immigrated to the US in 1858, but I didn’t find her in the 1880 or 1910 US Census for Rhode Island. Naturalization papers would settle this question.

The 1920 US Census has William and Jessie Grant also immigrating in 1858, and both being naturalized in 1880. I believe 1858 refers to the first time William alone went to the US to work as a carpenter in Providence, Rhode Island.

None of the children are living with them in 1920. But, I think I found son William in New Jersey living at 107 Fairmount Rd, Ridgewood, Bergen County, NJ with wife Janet and children Margaret,9; Mary 8; Janet 6; and Robert 4 5/12. He listed his occupation as a lawyer, but it is hard to read the census page.
